Poonam Bhagat

 

Poonam Bhagat is known as one of the countries most well established designers, but what people don't know about her is that ; she is a self made entrepreneur who left her rich husband’s home with nothing but a bag , self respect and faith in her abilities to make it on her own . She launched her label T A I K A in January 1991. In these 22 years she has become one of the leading Fashion Designers in India and is also on the Board of Governors for The Fashion Design Council of India , a non-profit organization, which is the apex body of fashion design in India, represented by over 350 members. Founded on the premise of promoting, nurturing and representing the best of fashion design talent in the country; its prime objective is to propagate the Business of Fashion.

 

She is also a core group member of The Earth Foundation , an NGO that provides for the under-privileged girl child.

 

TAIKA , which means “magic” in Finnish, is known for its use of natural and eco-friendly fabrics with a strong play of colors and masterful applications of embroideries and appliqués to create silhouettes that are edgy , contemporary yet classic . She designs only for women.The label sells from the finest designer boutiques pan India and has made successful international forays into Milan, Rome, Tokyo , London , New York , Johannesburg and West Palm Beach, Florida .She designed all the costumes for Felician David’s French Opera “Lalla Roukh”. It was performed at The Kennedy Centre , Washington DC and The Lincoln Centre , New York, by Opera Lafayette in January this year and won her many accolades including rave reviews and mentions in The Washington Post and The New York Times, among others.

 

Poonam is 52 , lives in New Delhi and is also an avid poet .
